Church History

Antioch Christian Church was founded in 1876 by a small but determined group of believers

from the Spencer community. With no church buildings in the Horsepasture district at that time,

early worship services were held in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Houston Matthews, where the

faithful gathered to pray, praise, and study God’s Word.

As the congregation grew, God opened the door for a permanent place of worship. After Mr. A.

L. Pedigo generously donated land, the first church building was constructed on September 24,

1880. This historic milestone made Antioch the first Black Disciples of Christ Christian

Church in both Virginia and North Carolina, marking it as a spiritual landmark in the region.

Under the leadership of Elder Samuel Hairston, Antioch Christian Church became a proud

partner of the Piedmont District Convention, which has since grown to include 21 churches

across Virginia and North Carolina. This partnership strengthened Antioch’s mission, outreach,

and connection to the wider Christian community.

Now standing 150 years strong, Antioch Christian Church has been shepherded by numerous

pastors who have each contributed to its spiritual growth and enduring legacy. Today, the church

is home to 87 members, with 57 active members faithfully serving, worshiping, and carrying

forward the mission established by the founders.
